TechTalk with Dan Zinman, Miles Chemical, on Wastewater Treatment

We spoke with Dan Zinman, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Miles Chemical based in Arleta, California, and Ismael Medina, a Technical Service Rep for wastewater.

Ismael MedinaIsmael MedinaZinman and Medina discussed the value of solids recycling in wastewater pretreatment and how they remake non-believers in both continuous and batch treatment.

“Solids recycling definitely is a practice that's underutilized, and people don't really see the benefit,” Medina says. “It's hard to get them to see the benefits, but there are a lot of benefits from reusing chemistry that typically wouldn't use on one pass.”

Medina says most shops use the specific chemistry in their lines, and then it drops out as sludge, which they then pay to send off their sludge. He says they can reuse it back in the process and reduce costs by reducing the chemistry and getting better performance.

“There's a lot of benefits that customers don't know about until you show them what those results can be,” Medina says. “When they finally see it, they start seeing their sludge reduction, chemistry reduction, and overall increased performance in their system.”

Zinman points out that Miles has several unique products for surface-finishing wastewater pretreatment, including GC-040 and CoPrep CMG. Plus, being located in Southern California helps to be on-site to assist with the process.

“Being local, we can be on-site fairly quickly and get that sample of wastewater to see what the process is,” Zinman says. “Ismael will do jar testing on-site and take it back to the lab to come up with what that right solution is.”
