TechTalk: Scott Romberger on MacDermid Envio Solutions’ EnvioTRI

MacDermid Envio Solutions has launched a new trivalent chromium wastewater treatment process, EnvioTRI.

Scott Romberger, EnvioTECH Product Manager for North America, says EnvioTRI is a dedicated and fully automatic unit that makes wastewater treatment of trivalent chrome electrolyte rinses easy.

“The EnvioTRI was designed to make sure that applicators didn’t run into treatment problems as they transition from hexavalent chrome to trivalent chrome chemistries,” Romberger says. “Chrome is complexed, and there are various complexors in these chemistries. And on the back end of that, it can start to tie up your waste stream and tie up other metals and cause chrome to rise to non-compliant numbers.”

He says the EnvioTRI separates the chromium in those complexes from the rinse waters that are flowing to waste so that the water is nearly free of chrome and it is free of those complexors.

Romberger says it is very easy to change to the EnvioTRI system, and it is fully automated.

“Outside of changing out a few consumables every now and then, you really shouldn’t have to touch it,” he says. “Obviously, with everything, you want to make sure somebody’s there to check on it and make sure it hasn’t got a fault, but it’s very automated.

EnvioTRI can be used to treat rinse waters of chloride- and sulfate-based trivalent chrome electrolytes as well as hybrid or mixed electrolytes. It is suitable for both rack and barrel applications. Other benefits include:

  • Up to 99.5% removal of trivalent chrome
  • In-situ waste treatment solution
  • Fully automatic – autonomous operation
  • Anticipates forthcoming legislation and regulations
  • Meets Industry 4.0 characteristics
  • Reduces the wastewater treatment cost and enables customers to meet consent limits
  • Scalable
